Perplexitys Ad Retreat: The Death of AI Search Advertising Dream?

Remember when everyone thought AI search would be the next big advertising platform? Perplexity just threw cold water on that idea—and it might be the smartest move they have ever made.

The AI search startup announced this week that it is abandoning plans to put ads in its product. Not scaling back. Not experimenting. Abandoning entirely. This from a company whose CEO said just two years ago that advertising could be really, really profitable.

What changed? Everything.

The Google Paradox

Here is the irony: Google is changing to be like Perplexity more than Perplexity is trying to take on Google, said a Perplexity executive at a press briefing this week.

Think about that. The $2 trillion search giant is scrambling to add AI features that Perplexity had from day one. Gemini is basically Google answer to Perplexity. AI Mode in Search is basically Perplexity with ads.

But Perplexity is doing the opposite. Instead of adding ads, they are running away from them.

The Numbers Do Not Lie

Let us be honest: Perplexity growth has not lived up to the hype. The company raised money promising to bring the power of AI to billions. Current reality? About 60 million monthly active users. That is more than double what they had last year, but it is less than 10% of ChatGPT 800 million weekly users.

The company realized that trying to compete with Google on advertising is futile. Google has two decades of advertising infrastructure, relationships, and optimization. No one beats Google at ads.

The Smart Move

So Perplexity made a counterintuitive decision: go premium instead of ad-supported. The company is betting that users will pay for an ad-free experience.

This might actually work. There is a market for premium, privacy-focused, ad-free search. Perplexity is positioning itself as the anti-Google.

The future of AI search might not be advertising at all. It might be subscription. Perplexity just bet on that future.
